Grade Level Education
-
Kindergarten - Second Grade
Kindergartener’s are introducted to gender identity as some of their classmates may chose to identify in a way other than their assigned gender at birth. The Health Curriculum explains that teachers should begin to teach about gender expression and begin “dispelling myths” about gender roles and expectations (pg. 107, CA Health Framework)
-
Third Grade
Education is now being introducted on body functions to include organs, stages of life, and reproductive organs.
Third graders are being taught that while some students may be born with certain organs, they may identify a different way (pg. 173, CA Health Framework)
-
Fourth - Sixth Grade
Between these three years- students are introducted to gender identity, same-sex relationships, gender expression, meaning that “ gender refers to attitudes, feelings, characteristics, and behaviors” instead of biological characteristics. (pg. 267, CA Health Framework”
-
Seventh - Eight Grade
Sexual education is continued in these two grade levels to introduce STI/HIV prevention, gender neutral relationships, contraceptives, and preventative measures with in-class examples of male/female anatomy (pg. 354, CA Health Framework)
-
Ninth - Twelfth Grade
Gender theory based education is built upon in the high school years to include further support towards same-sex relationships, pregnancy outcomes and situations, as well as further in-class examples of safe sex practices.
Teachers are told to use examples of same-sex relationships in lesson plans to further affirm varying relationship types in an attempt to be inclusive of LGBT+ students (pg. 469, CA Health Framework)
